7/17/17. I was excited to get my rooming assignment for the upcoming freshman year because I had requested a guy to be my roommate who got the same scholarship as me. We already had common ground going into the year and I was excited to room with him for a lot of reasons. When rooming assignments came out, we weren’t rooming together. After some confusion, I was told that I was placed into the ESLLC because of my major and housing preferences. I decided to come to DU at the very last minute, so applying to the LLC’s was not a priority of mine and I didn’t even know what they entailed. This was really frustrating, because I had never applied and didn’t really want to do it. There was lots of hesitancy in my decision to join the LLC. Despite my initial frustration and hesitancy, I have realized that joining the LLC was one of the best things that could’ve happened to me for my first year.
9/4/17. I met the other people in the LLC and began to understand just what exactly the LLC’s did. I began to realize just how incredible of an opportunity it is to be a part of the LLC as the year progressed. With every retreat, every class, every hangout, I realized that I was blessed to be living with these people. We all share similar interests in the environment and care for it deeply, and I think that fact alone has brought us all closer. We love the earth in a “we like dirt” kinda way. I have met some of my best friends this year through the LLC, and I have had opportunities to explore nature in ways that I wouldn’t have had if I had turned down the LLC. From camping in the mountains, to hiking, to the upcoming white water rafting trip, there are so many awesome memories that I will cherish for years to come.
5/6/18. Reflecting on the past year, I realize just how thankful I am for the phone call from Brianna where she gave me more information about the LLC. I am so happy for the friendships and memories I have made this year. Being a part of the LLC has been one of the most rewarding experiences and has given me opportunities that I wouldn’t have had otherwise. Having such a strong connection and interest with a large group of people right off the bat in college made it easier to segway into other activities and truly thrive in my first year.
6/6/18. When we all part for the summer, having finished our first year together, it will be a bittersweet time, knowing that we will all be back next year, but that the next three months not seeing them will be tough. I would like to thank each and every one of my fellow LLCers for giving me the opportunity to share experiences with them and making my first year of college so fun. I would like to thank Brianna for being so persistent in her pursuit of me as a potential LLCer. And finally I would like to thank Don “gone” Sullivan and Megan Kelly for their instruction and dedication to making this first year a good time.
