I remember when I first found out about the University of Denver Living and Learning Communities, I thought they were interesting, but I wasn’t sure if they would be for me. The aspect of living on a floor surrounded by people with similar interests sounded like fun, but I wasn’t sure if I would fit into any of them. When I found out about the Environmental Sustainability LLC, I pictured a group of easy-going, nature-loving hippies that I could probably fit in with very well. I am happy to say that my LLC experience has been exactly that.
I think that the decision to join the LLC was one of the best decisions I have made in a while. Thinking back on my first week of college, it was a huge relief to know that all of the people on my floor were people who I would get along with. Although there have been a few minor conflicts within the hall, we have all coexisted very well. I feel that I have made better friends through the LLC than I have ever made before. It is very comforting to know that I have a group of people that I feel I can rely on if I need to, and the LLC has definitely provided me with that.
Right from the start, I had people to talk to. I imagine that people who were not in LLCs had a harder time making friends than I did simply because the people in my hall were the people who I knew I would get along with best. I didn’t have to search hard for the people that I would form close relationships with throughout the year. The LLC retreats were definitely a highlight of the LLC experience. Although we were impeded by less than perfect weather for 2 of our 3 trips, being in the mountains as an LLC family were really good bonding times, regardless of whether or not we could do the planned activity.
I am infinitely thankful for my LLC experience. I have an immense respect for everyone in this hall, and I trust all of them. We are pretty much a family by now. As excited as I am to be done with school work and embrace the care free leisure of summer, I will really miss my time living in this community. This hall will forever be a special place to me.
