Water purification through SOLAR POWER

Written by Kira Weisz, ESLLC 2016-2017

You might ask yourself why sterilization of water is so important. Unless the water comes from wells, water is collected from the same source of water that animals congregate, drink, bathe, and defecate. Human consumption of this water is very dangerous and can lead to dysentery, and other diseases. Most water is found far from villages and the people must walk far from the villages and the people must walk distances in the sun.

At Purdue University, researchers have created a device that requires sunshine to produce purified water. Chip Blatchley, a professor of environmental and ecological engineering led the development of the purification system. The creation of this solar powered water purifier was developed to help areas where clean water is needed.

The water purifier system uses the sunlight to create clean, drinkable water. The UV radiation kills microorganisms to turn unpurified water into purified water. Although the project is not yet complete they are testing it all over.

In the Mexican village of La Moncalona, it is recorded that the water purification system was a big success. La Moncalona was chosen to be the first to test the system because of the scarce sources of clean water and the endless sunshine. The village has turned their clean water revenue into a business. They make about $3,600 each year from the water.
